Difference between mha and mba in hospital management

“The MHA is health care intensive,” says Spedding. “It’s designed as a program for someone coming from a health care or practitioner background.”
The MHA provides a deeper dive into health care management and leadership. Its curriculum involves core business classes, but unlike the MBA, the core classes are focused on the health care market. That means that the MHA graduate will be heavily rooted in the business side of health care and prepared for a career focused on health care leadership.

Master of Business Administration in Health Care Management

An MBA in Health Care Management has more of an overall business focus, with its core business courses covering skills transferrable to any industry.
“The MBA has big buckets of core business operations, such as analytics, leadership, accounting, and finance.” says Sankovich. “All the core MBA courses will have faculty practitioners in various business fields, including, but not limited to, health care. The health care specialization courses more mirror and overlap the MHA, but the MBA is more deeply focused on business itself.”

What is healthcare management?

I am writing this answer from the perspective of India.
In India, Healthcare Management includes courses which would help you in managing projects related to public health e.g. Nutrition programmes, Water & Sanitation Programmes, Maternal & Child Health Programmes, etc. You can get job in National Health Mission of Govt of India. You can get job in Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) which is also a separate department of GOI.
Many Non-Government Organizations are engaged in public health e.g Save the Children, CARE-India, UNICEF, etc.
It is course or job designed for the people who want to do something for Social Welfare.
Indian Institute of Healthcare Management (IIHMR)- Delhi is the best institute for Healthcare Management. Though they have branches in Delhi and Bangalore, but I would recommend Jaipur because in 2013 they got the status of University and you can get MBA degree from their. Rest of its branches provide PGDM course in Healthcare Management.
As a fresher, you would easily earn between 4 to 4.5 lakhs p.a.
Generally, doctors with MBBS/BDS/AYUSH background opt for Healthcare Management to enhance their knowledge. But, BSc., BSW and BBA-Hospital/Healthcare Management students also go for this course.

What is it like to do hospital management from IIHMR

I would definitely recommend you to pursue MBA in Hospital management program from IIHMR as this university is pioneer in the field of hospital and Health Management. Usually admission is through MAT/CAT score followed by GD/PI, if you have a relative experience in the field of medicine and allied sciences mat may not be required! There is a slight added advantage if your background is related to medicine or allied sciences both in terms of admission and getting a good profile job. This college has a good placement record, ofcourse depending on the performance during interviews but this college will equip the required skills during the course period to perform satisfactorily. All the best for your admission.

IIHMR Jaipur – 100% placed - Average package: 5.28, 5.29 and 4.2 lacs in 2015, 2014 and 2013 – Highest package: 11.58, 11.52 and 10.52 lacs in last 3 years

Which is better, an MBA in hospital administration or an MBA in healthcare management

It would be unfair to say which is better, each programme is unique, but I can give you a comparison of both and you can decide which is better. Before you read, let me give you an idea about myself, for assuring reliability of my answer. I am have done hospital management some 10 years back and after that worked for 5–6 corporate hospitals and few government hospitals. I also worked for a year in public health field. I also did M.Phil. and doing PhD. Currently I am associated as a faculty at Healthcare Management Programme of Goa Institute of Management.
First of all, these nomenclatures (hospital management or healthcare management) are given by academia and industry, and there is no specific definition to it. So, at lot of places these nomenclatures are used inter-changeably. Individual institutes decide what they want to call their programme and the programme content may vary from institute to institute, even if the degree name is same. Hence, MBA in healthcare management may mean only hospital management in some institute and only public health in another institute, while in few others it may mean combination of both or even inclusion of pharmaceutical management.
So for you to decide, what you want to choose as a career, just looking at the name of degree may not be sufficient. You will also have to refer their programme curriculum (courses they teach), sectors in which their students gets placed and overall objective of the programme.
Having said, some things largely follow when you say hospital management or healthcare management. Below table will give you a comparison based upon what general happens in these two discipline,

I hope above table will give you fair idea about what lies within each of this programme. As I said, earlier that these things do vary from institute to institute. Like at GIM, ISB, IIM-K, etc. healthcare management means significantly different things. Here, the focus is more on producing managers (like general MBA) who are tailored to work in healthcare industry. For them healthcare industry means all organization that play a role in healthcare and it includes medical devices, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, health economics Healthcare IT, besides traditional hospitals and public health.

Scope of hospital management in india

Scope of Hospital management program in India.
  • Firstly, this Hospital/Healthcare is amongst the fastest growing sector in India and worldwide, because of which there is a high demand of managerial skills in this sector. This high growth is expected to be there for next two decades.
  • Secondly, there is a gap in presence of managers in hospital industry. One reason for this is, the students doing MBA largely comes from engineering or commerce stream and they usually take up employment in non-healthcare sectors. Due to this there was a need for preparing managers who can specifically work in hospitals.
